Symbology http://inspiredesignblog.co.uk/2011/03/03/symbology/ http://inspiredesignblog.co.uk/2011/03/03/symbology/#comments Thu, 03 Mar 2011 16:04:39 +0000 http://inspiredesignblog.co.uk/?p=746 For those amongst you that are semiotically inclined, here’s The Noun Project. A great resource for pictograms with a nice old school slant. Some of them are very reminiscent of British Rail pictograms pre their redesign by Lloyd Northover in 1999. And they’re free, and downloadable, definitely worth bookmarking.

For the bookshelf – Supergraphics http://inspiredesignblog.co.uk/2010/09/09/for-the-bookshelf-supergraphics/ http://inspiredesignblog.co.uk/2010/09/09/for-the-bookshelf-supergraphics/#comments Thu, 09 Sep 2010 13:06:04 +0000 http://inspiredesignblog.co.uk/?p=672 A new book by Unit Editions, to give it it’s full title Supergraphics. Transforming Space: Graphic Design for Walls, Buildings & Spaces.

Supergraphics is the name of an architectural movement from the 1960s and 70s that saw architects attempt to ‘remove solidity, gravity, even history’ by the simple act of applying paint and graphics to the interior and exterior surfaces of buildings.

You can buy the book from Unit Editions

More ‘supergraphics’ from Stella Artois in their fantastic recent film Up There.

New New York Subway Map http://inspiredesignblog.co.uk/2010/06/01/new-new-york-subway-map/ http://inspiredesignblog.co.uk/2010/06/01/new-new-york-subway-map/#comments Tue, 01 Jun 2010 22:57:07 +0000 http://inspiredesignblog.co.uk/?p=547 From the New York Times a look at a new version of the NY Subway map. Interesting to look at the older versions although I have to agree with  Erik Spiekermann, “Maps that use diagonal type are designed by amateurs”.

The full thing on the NY Times.

As always there’s an alternative, the Kick Map

A fabulous piece of wayfinding for Eureka Tower Carpark in Melbourne from Axel Peemoeller, one of those so simple I wish I’d though of that pieces of design.
